I create functional and sculpture works in clay that encourage touch and interaction. My inspiration comes from the desire to pick up and touch pieces even though we have been taught to regard art pieces differently. I intentionally leave fingerprints and the texture created when handbuilding and pinching forms. I want to show that the work is handmade. I have been exploring surface design on my works to incorporate more colors and layers. I enjoy the layered quality that can occur when firing ceramics in atmospheric kilns like wood firing, but I am not able to access that type of firing often. Instead, I am experimenting with layering washes and glazes to create the quality of depth within the surface that I am drawn to.
